Discover the literature of Spain and Latin America while improving your Spanish. Our Spanish and Latin American Literature Course in Granada introduces you to some of the most important writers, literary movements and works from the Spanish-speaking world.
The course is designed for students who enjoy reading and want to explore Spanish and Latin American culture through literature. It combines literary analysis with an introduction to the historical and cultural context behind each period.
What will you study?
The course covers the main periods of Spanish literature, as well as selected authors and works from Latin America. You will read and analyse extracts from poetry, novels and theatre while developing your understanding of literary Spanish.
Literary theory and analysis
First, you will learn the basic tools needed to understand and analyse literary texts. These include literary genres, rhyme and metre, figures of speech and literary commentary.
Spanish literature through history
Next, we explore the main periods and movements in Spanish literature, from the Middle Ages to the 19th century. You will discover important periods such as the Renaissance, the Spanish Golden Age and Romanticism.
Along the way, you will read extracts from representative works and learn about influential writers such as Miguel de Cervantes. This approach allows you to understand Spanish literature in its historical and cultural context.
Modern and contemporary literature
We then move on to Spanish literature of the 20th and 21st centuries. You will discover important literary movements and authors, including writers such as Miguel de Unamuno, Federico García Lorca and Ramón J. Sender.
In addition, the course covers different forms of literature, including poetry, prose and theatre.
Spanish and Latin American writers
Finally, we look at selected writers from Spain and Latin America. Depending on your interests, you may explore authors such as Antonio Machado, Pablo Neruda or Gabriel García Márquez, as well as Federico García Lorca, one of Granada’s most famous writers.
You will learn about their lives and works and analyse selected extracts from their writing.
A flexible literature course
The content of the course can be adapted to your interests and needs. If you are particularly interested in a specific author, period or literary movement, we can spend more time on that topic.
Similarly, if you have limited time or would prefer to skip a particular subject, we can adjust the programme. If you would like to continue reading outside class, we can also recommend books suited to your level and interests.
